The world of coffee: an overview of capsule and pod systems

Tassimo, Delizio or Nespresso? It's not unusual to get lost in the jungle of capsule coffee machines. Here's an overview of the most common systems.

Nespresso

Nespresso capsules were already launched in 1986. They were distributed by the Swiss company "Nestlé". A few years later, the capsules conquered the market. The Nespresso capsule system belongs to the top-of-the-range systems. These capsules are easy to buy in a Nespresso boutique or on the Internet. After the patent expired in 2012, some supermarkets jumped at the chance and launched their own capsules compatible with the system. The associated machines are produced by DeLonghi and Krups. Many espresso lovers swear by the Nespresso system. Meanwhile, there are countless coffee blends available. Limited Editions" have also been launched, often only available at a certain time of year. In addition to the wide choice of espresso varieties, Nespresso also offers a number of Lungo variants. The Nespresso system clearly focuses on coffee of all kinds. Unlike other capsule systems, you won't find any powdered milk or other strange ingredients. Nespresso has not focused on tea, unlike Nestlé's Special.T products.

Dolce Gusto

Like Nespresso, Dolce Gusto also comes from the Swiss company Nestlé. The capsule system was developed with the Krups brand. Dolce Gusto capsules are just like Tassimo capsules available in supermarkets. Unlike Nestlé's Nespresso capsules, Dolce Gusto capsules are made of plastic. The brand offers many varieties such as milk-based drinks and "non-coffee" drinks, although the focus remains on coffee.

Tassimo

The capsules for the Tassimo system, called "T Disc", are produced by the American company Jacobs Jacobs Douwe Egberts. This capsule system established itself on the market in 2005 and has found many adherents. The machines are manufactured by Bosch. The advantage of the Tassimo capsule system is that T Discs can be found in almost every supermarket. The system is also very flexible, as you can also prepare tea, chocolate drinks and many other things. The capsule machines only work with patented capsules from well-known brands such as Jacobs-Kaffee.

Delizio

The Delizio capsule system has already been available for a few years in Switzerland. This system focuses on machines making coffee and tea. It offers a wide choice of tea and coffee capsules for private use. Delizio machines are particularly robust, with a top-of-the-range finish. As a result, they are also a popular alternative to Nespresso machines. Apart from the Iperespresso shown below, this is the only capsule system with pre-infusion.

E.S.E pods

E.S.E.(short for "easy serving espresso") is a pod standard specially developed for coffee machines with sieve holders. The ground coffee lies between two layers of filter paper and is first placed in a screen holder and then in the coffee machine. A water heater then guides the water through the powder at a pressure of 9 to 10 bars. As these sieve holders generally have a smaller diameter than standard pods, espresso pods with a diameter of 44cm are often the only ones that can be used. These are available in a range of roasts - including decaffeinated. Thanks to their components - ground coffee and paper - the pods are entirely biodegradable. So, compared to aluminium or plastic capsules, pods are much more environmentally friendly and resource-efficient.

Iperespresso

The Iperespresso capsule system comes from Italian coffee giant Ily. In Switzerland, these products are sold under the Amici brand. The company's coffee is synonymous with unique taste and true "Italianità" - Italian lifestyle. With the Iperespresso system, Ily's delicious espresso can also be easily prepared at home. The Iperespresso system must be used with capsules bearing the same name. With Iperespresso, Ily dares to enter the world of pod systems. Numerous machines in different price segments are available. Iperespresso pods are patented capsules that work with a special infusion chamber.
