The 3G network switch-off – what Galaxus Mobile customers need to know

Sunrise is scheduled to shut down its 3G mobile network in Switzerland from 10 June 2025 onwards. As a result, nationwide 3G coverage will no longer be guaranteed. If you’re a Galaxus Mobile customer with a device that gets a 4G signal but doesn’t support VoLTE (Voice over LTE), you’ll also be affected by the switch-off.

From 10 June 2025 onwards, Sunrise will be shutting down its 3G mobile network in Switzerland. Swisscom set to follow suit, phasing out the technology by the end of 2025. This will make room for more powerful and efficient mobile technologies such as 4G and 5G, which already handle the majority of mobile data traffic today. Customers with Galaxus Mobile, which runs on the Sunrise network, may also be affected by the changeover.

What does the shutdown mean for you?

Galaxus Mobile customers who’re still using 3G devices won’t be able to make calls (including emergency calls), use mobile data or send text messages from anywhere in Switzerland on that device from 10 June onwards. If you have a 4G device that doesn’t support Voice over LTE (VoLTE), you won’t be able to make calls either.

Here’s how to check whether your device will be affected by the 3G network shutdown:

Android

  • Settings > Mobile networks > Mobile data > Network type (or similar). If you see options for 4G/LTE or 5G, your phone supports these networks.
  • VoLTE: Settings > Mobile network > Mobile data (or similar). Look for a slider labelled «VoLTE» or «VoLTE calls». If there’s a switch there, your phone supports VoLTE.

iOS

  • Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data. If you can select LTE or 5G from there, it’s supported.
  • VoLTE: Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data. If there’s a selectable VoLTE option, the feature is supported.
