Online comparison site moneyland.ch has carried out a thorough review of roaming rates in Switzerland. Galaxus Mobile comes out very well in the rankings, especially when it comes to data roaming alone. Within the EU, Galaxus Mobile is one of the cheapest providers, with its 1-month data pack taking the top spot in Moneyland’s analysis. Even outside of Europe, our prices make the competition look out-of-date. Cuba and Vietnam are the only countries where we’d advise taking a digital detox.

With the summer holidays just around the corner, many people will be spending the vacation abroad. If you don’t want any nasty surprises, you’d be well advised to give roaming a thought before you head off. Is a data package already included in your mobile plan? If not, what roaming packages does your provider offer? Are these packages only valid for a limited time? Or will you be able to benefit from one on your next trip abroad too?

Navigating the maze of roaming options requires a lot of time and energy. Ralf Beyeler at moneyland.ch, however, was undeterred, analysing and summarising Swiss telecom companies’ current roaming rates (in German). In a nutshell, roaming tariffs differ massively by provider.

In this article, I’ll focus purely on data roaming because it’s key to most consumers. These days, if you want to make a call, you can use your data volume to do so using apps like WhatsApp, Instagram or Skype. Here, you can find out which providers within and outside the EU have the most attractive offers for you.

For holidays elsewhere in Europe

Moneyland.ch compared the cost of data-only packages for EU countries. Galaxus Mobile ranks among the lowest-priced providers. For infrequent users (1 gigabyte), Galaxus Mobile is the best option, at 9.90 Swiss francs. Galaxus Mobile is the second-cheapest provider in the 2 GB data package category, with its 10 GB package ranking fourth cheapest.

Seven of the providers Moneyland compared, including Galaxus Mobile, also offer data packages valid for less than a year. When it comes to data packages valid for at least 30 days, Galaxus Mobile is the clear front-runner, proving cheapest at 1 GB, 3 GB and 10 GB.

For holidays outside of Europe

Holidaymakers heading out of the EU have to reckon with significant roaming price differences. Moneyland.ch checked how much a gigabyte costs in 14 popular travel destinations worldwide. Galaxus Mobile’s package is the most attractive in 8 out of 14 countries, namely Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Turkey, Canada and the USA. Anyone needing to use Google Maps, Waze or WhatsApp in Vietnam or Cuba will need to fork out more for the data volume required.

Side note: if you prefer setting up an eSIM or buying a second SIM card in your destination country, you should continue to do so. You’ll find more info on that here (in German).

What’s the main thing you use your smartphone for when you’re on holiday? Do you check your provider’s rates and roaming packages before travelling abroad? And how satisfied are you with your mobile provider’s roaming packages? Let us know in the comments section!
