Swiss residents tightening up on home security

From cameras, to alarm systems, to motion detectors, many people in Switzerland are investing in home security. So far this year, we’ve seen sales of products in our home security range increase by 32 per cent. Smart locks proved to be October’s strongest-growing product, with sales up 164 per cent.

Recently, the clocks went back – and outside, it’s getting dark increasingly early. This is at least good news for burglars, with the period between November and March being peak season for break-ins. It’s easier for them to tell whether people are at home or not. If the lights are off, nobody’s in – and it’s game on.

However, housebreaker gangs don’t always have it so easy. Many people in Switzerland have already taken steps to secure their homes. In the first quarter of 2023, Digitec Galaxus customers bought 35 per cent more home security products, a trend we’ve already reported on.

The uptick in sales continued in quarters two and three, with customers buying 26% more network cameras and 28% more motion detectors between January and October. Alarm systems (+33%), smart locks (+31%) and cash boxes (+31%) proved even more popular.

Key-under-the-doormat era well and truly over

Padlocks and key safes are the home security range’s bestsellers.

Key safes, usually fitted with combination locks, seem to have established themselves as a handy way of storing keys securely. Definitely a safer option than hiding a key under the doormat or in a letterbox or flowerpot.

A keyless alternative is the smart lock. Boasting sales growth of 164 per cent, the product is October’s rising star.

These electronic locks are fitted on the inside of your door, above the existing locking cylinder. It isn’t visible from outside. Once installed, the door can be opened keylessly via an app.

Have you already given your home a security upgrade? Do you find alarm systems, smart locks and the like unnecessary? Or do you prefer the idea of using your dog to scare off potential intruders? Join the discussion in the comments.

If you’re the victim of a break-in while you’re at home, it’s best not to play the hero. Get yourself and other members of your household to safety. Bear in mind that burglaries usually take place when nobody’s home. If you arrive home and realise you’ve been burgled, don’t go inside as this could contaminate the crime scene. Instead, call the police immediately on 117 or 112.
