How Switzerland cleans: spring start trends and figures

Time to give your home a spring clean? Then you’re in the same boat as many people in Switzerland – because in 2025, the demand for cleaning products and appliances at Galaxus is greater than ever before. Steam vacuum cleaners are the trend this year.

Shelves: dusty. Sofa: has stains. Conservatory: full of pollen. It’s time for spring cleaning. Many people in Switzerland seem to have the same idea this year, as demand for cleaning products and accessories at Galaxus is 25 per cent higher than in 2024. Sales of cleaning appliances have increased by as much as 30 per cent.

Galaxus customers are particularly interested in cleaning products – from drain cleaners and mould removers to oven foam. Cleaning accessories such as mops or dusters are second on the priority list. We’re also a country of coffee lovers and tea drinkers, so the need for descaler is correspondingly high.

The good old vacuum cleaner dominates when it comes to power-operated cleaning tools. However, for every ten vacuum cleaners purchased from Galaxus, four of them are robot vacuum cleaners – and the trend is rising.

Demand for descaling agents for coffee machines, washing machines and bathrooms has risen particularly sharply. Washing-up liquid and kitchen roll are also much more popular than in 2024.

The most popular product this spring is the steam vacuum cleaner. Galaxus customers use them to combat stains on carpets, upholstered furniture or car seats – these appliances are particularly popular with families and in households with animals. Or they serve as a convenient alternative to the mop. «The wet floor cleaners and hard floor cleaners are particularly popular with our customers because they clean floors quickly and conveniently,» says Sina Milanesi, who is responsible for this range at Galaxus. «Unlike mops, modern steam vacuum cleaners suck the dirty water into a tank, which means they don’t simply spread the dirt over the tiles or parquet.»

And more and more people in Switzerland seem to be convinced by the technology. In the first quarter of 2025, Galaxus customers bought almost 50 per cent more steam vacuum cleaners and over 70 per cent more accessories such as attachments, filters and cleaning solutions compared to the first quarter of 2024.

The trend towards robot vacuum cleaners is also continuing at a steady rate – demand for these is a good 40 per cent higher. Because these little helpers on wheels regularly need fresh brushes, dust bags or batteries, the demand for accessories has also risen by almost half.

Homes in Zurich are sparkling

There are also regional differences when it comes to purchasing cleaning products and appliances. In relation to the size of the population, demand at Galaxus is particularly high in Zurich, Zug and Aargau. In Uri in particular, but also in Geneva, Glarus and Ticino, residents are in less of a hurry to dust.

By contrast, there’s no divide between the genders. At Galaxus, men and women split their cleaning purchases equally, with men ordering electric appliances slightly more often and women more likely to order disposable gloves, sponges or shower cubicle cleaners.

People under the age of 25 rarely order cleaning products or cleaning appliances from Galaxus: this age group accounts for just two per cent of all orders. The rate for all orders across the entire range is a good five per cent. From the age of 35, however, the proportion of spring-cleaning fanatics is above average. To put it bluntly, it’s parents who purchase the mop for the shared flat or the floor soap for the family household.

Shelves dusted, sofa cleaned, coffee machine descaled – we’re ready for spring. Because when the home’s sparkling, that’s when the fun stuff can really begin: buying plants for the balcony, enjoying ice cream and relaxing in the sun.
