Hedgehogs are wild and free-living rodents that can usually find enough food throughout most of the year. However, there are times when they readily accept additional food offerings, especially in spring and late autumn. During both seasons, the natural food supply is not particularly abundant. In spring, there are neither ripe fruits nor a large number of ground-dwelling insects available, while in late autumn, the natural fruit cycle leaves a shortage of food, especially as other small animals compete with hedgehogs for the dwindling food resources in preparation for hibernation.

In spring, hedgehogs have depleted their reserves from the winter pause. For the new feeding and breeding period, hedgehogs require sufficient new food, which is not always available in adequate quantities, especially after harsh or prolonged winters. In the second half of the year, hedgehogs give birth to their young. During the initial rearing period, the food requirements of hedgehogs are particularly high. Since hedgehogs usually give birth to multiple young, there is immediate food competition among the hoglets. It is not always possible to find enough food naturally to sustain all the young through the winter.
