Wood protection: your wood needs to be treated well too

Spring is just around the corner and you want to make your garden and wooden furniture shine again? A wood treatment is just the thing to freshen up garden furniture, garden fences and garden sheds made of wood.
Wood is subject to a lot of wear and tear, especially outdoors: be it from sun, rain, wind or frost. Mould and mildew attack the wood of your beloved garden bench day and night. You can only sit on your beloved garden bench for many years to come with the help of a wood preservative.
However, even if you make every effort to preserve your wooden garden furniture, there are a few pitfalls. So that you can enjoy your garden shed or your garden shed, I've put together the best way for you to go from shopping at Galaxus to saying "Yes, it still looks good" in a few years' time.
The right preparation
We explain step by step what you need to do
- Clean the wood before painting with a brush or a pressure washer. If present, remove resin residue, moss and cobwebs. Greyed or peeling paintwork should be sanded off. You can either use sandpaper or a sanding machine for this. For safety reasons, use a respirator mask for this step.
- To make the cleaning work easier at the end, it is advisable to protect areas that are not to be treated, such as the floor or windows, with covering material from the outset.
- Once the wood has been completely cleaned of dust, resin and oil stains, apply the correct wood primer to the untreated wood. The primer reduces the absorbency of the wood and creates a stable foundation for subsequent coats. Please note: Solvent-based primers may only be painted over with solvent-based stains. The same applies to water-based primers and water-based stains. No primer is required for 2-in-1 wood preservative stains. Priming is only recommended for untreated softwoods.
Finishing coat
- First shake the container or stir it well .2. Then apply the first and second coat with a brush in the direction of the grain. You must wait 12 hours between the two coats, which may vary depending on the product, temperature and humidity.
Tip 1 from our colour expert:
Directly weathered wood should never be painted with "Colourless" alone. The motto here is: the darker the colour, the better the UV protection.
Tip 2 from our colour expert:
When painting, the outside temperature should be above 15 degrees, but no more than 25 degrees. To avoid consequential damage such as cracking, wood pests and fungal infestation, the wood moisture content must not exceed 15% when painting. The wood must therefore be dry. The measurement works wonderfully with a wood moisture meter.
