What will be played in 2020? An international trend committee predicts three trends for next year.
The international "TrendComittee" of the Spielwarenmesse Nürnberg scours the market year after year in search of the latest toy trends. The committee consists of 12 people, represented by trade journalists, market researchers and designers. They have identified the following three trends for 2020:
Climate change is omnipresent. Sustainability and environmental protection are particularly important to the younger generation, as "Fridays for Future" proves. The committee also sees this trend in the toy sector. Toys made from ecological materials or products created through recycling will therefore enjoy special attention next year. The focus will also be on games that teach environmentally friendly behaviour and promote environmental awareness among children.
E-sports are getting bigger and bigger, characters from computer games are becoming idols and YouTubers are being celebrated like global stars. This literally cries out for merchandise. Whether cuddly toys, action figures, puzzles or board games, virtual stars are conquering the physical world. All major manufacturers already have various licence themes in their range. In 2020, there will be more of them than ever before.
No matter what skin colour, religion or limitations a person has, we all love to play. Toys that promote tolerance, inclusion and diversity are therefore at the centre of the third trend for next year. Another approach is the promotion of people with special needs. Be it physical disabilities or illnesses such as dementia or Parkinson's: mental and physical skills can be trained through playful therapies.
