Stacking loot with Lego: Galaxus customers rake in cash with resales
by Alex Hämmerli
Stopped using a product you bought from Galaxus or Digitec? Instead of letting it gather dust, how about selling it in our secondhand section? Read on to find out how.
We probably all have things at home that we’ve used once, then cast aside – a neglected game console, a never-used-again pressure cooker, an old TV missing a streaming app. These aren’t just things that other people might really enjoy – they’re also worth money.
Flea markets are the time-honoured place to turn your old treasures into cash. Galaxus and Digitec, however, provide an alternative to that tradition. On their resale platform, you can sell products purchased after 2014 from either of the two platforms. In order to be eligible for resale, the product must have been purchased new for at least 20 Swiss francs. This way, Galaxus and Digitec will be able to prevent the secondhand section from filling up with junk.
The service has been seamlessly integrated into the two online shops. Unlike on other online marketplaces, sellers don’t need to categorise and describe their products. Simply select the vacuum cleaner, graphics card or baby toy from your list in the resale section. After that, you’re asked to describe the condition of the product and set a selling price. You’ll also be able to upload photos, increasing your chances of landing a sale. After all, nobody wants to be sold a dud.
Your secondhand product will then appear as «used» in our online shops. In addition, discounted products from Digitec or Galaxus that customers have ordered, opened and returned are listed as «Used + tested».
Clocking in over 20 million visits per month, Digitec and Galaxus’s reach makes the shops attractive places to sell. Not only that, but over two million people living in Switzerland shop at the online market leader at least once a year. Plus, all existing warranty services are transferred to the product’s new owner.
Galaxus and Digitec take a commission for the service, which is calculated based on the selling price. However, there are no fees for publishing an ad online. Here’s the rest of the small print.
Sellers can set any selling price, or go with the price our system suggests. You can choose to keep the selling price the same or gradually reduce it over the bidding period until it reaches a given minimum. In auctioneering circles, this is known as a Dutch auction. As long as you haven’t already sold your product, you can delete the ad at any time.
Once someone has won the bid, you’ll receive a message from us containing the buyer’s postal address. As sooner as the buyer confirms they’ve received the goods, you’ll receive a credit note for the purchase amount. You can either put this towards your next purchase or have it transferred to your bank account.
What do you think of our secondhand feature? Have you ever bought or sold a used product on our resale platform? How could we improve this service? Let us know in the comments!
