Couscous is easy to prepare, tasty and healthy. Öko-Test also found very little to criticise in its latest test.

Do you also like eating couscous, whether as a salad or as a side dish? Then dig in, because according to Eko-Test, there is nothing wrong with this traditional food from North African cuisine. He has now taken a closer look at 20 types of durum wheat couscous. The good news first: none of the products analysed scored worse than "satisfactory". You can also find one of these products in our shop:

No one comes off really badly

Twelve organic and eight conventional products were tested for harmful substances such as mould or pesticide residues and contamination from mineral oil components.
14 of the couscous varieties tested were rated "very good", including Davert wholemeal couscous, Rewe organic couscous and Edeka couscous. Three were rated as "good" and the runners-up with a "satisfactory" rating were Suntat Couscous Moyen Original, K-Bio Wholemeal Couscous and Tipiak Couscous.

Not quite pure

The laboratory commissioned by Öko-Test detected the bee poison pirimiphos-methyl in four products, traces of the spray poison glyphosate in another and traces of cypermethrin in one of the organic products. Although all the quantities found were harmless to humans, they posed a threat to biodiversity and were particularly toxic to bees. The two brands Suntat Couscous Moyen Original and Tipiak Couscous contain slightly higher levels of mineral oil in addition to the bee poison. "The health consequences are still unclear, which is why we believe that food should contain as little of it as possible," says Öko-Test.

Couscous - popular and healthy

The grain balls have a high fibre content, especially in the wholemeal version, and therefore keep you full for longer. With a high proportion of carbohydrates but very little fat, couscous is an ideal source of energy with a high protein content. The minerals and trace elements it contains, such as selenium, are said to reduce the risk of some cancers and strengthen the immune system.

Let it taste good

You can also satisfy your couscous cravings in our shop, where you will also find suggestions on how to prepare it.
