Cashmere clothing: how to care for it
Cashmere has a reputation for being delicate and difficult to care for. But this is not the case. You just need to know how. Follow the guide!
Pullovers, scarves and other expensive cashmere garments: their luxury makes us dream. And they often frighten us with their care requirements. This is hardly surprising, given that cashmere comes from the deepest layer of goat hair. Each goat produces between 200 and 300 grams of wool per year. Not a lot! To knit a single jumper, you have to start by shearing several goats. Hence the high price and luxurious feel of this material.
Good news: cashmere is a wool that's less tricky to look after than people often imagine. Here are five rules to help you save time and extend the life of your cashmere garments.
1. Space your washes
Wool garments in general, and cashmere garments in particular, should be washed as infrequently as possible. This is because each wash is torture for the strands of wool and the knits of the fabric. The water and detergent put them to the test and relax them.
Instead of washing them, air them out. Instead of washing them, air out your cashmere garments. Another idea: put them in a plastic bag and put them in the freezer overnight. This will eliminate odours. Stains? Clean them by hand by rubbing gently with a tiny bit of special wool detergent.
2. Follow the care label
Once you've worn and aired your garment a few times, you may want to wash it. Before this step, read the care label carefully. This will tell you whether your jumper or scarf requires special care.
Soaking followed by hand washing seems gentle and avoids the risk of your garment shrinking. However, it is far from optimal for cashmere. Wool fibres absorb a lot of water during soaking, causing them to lose their original shape.
It's best to use the special wool programme. It's best to use the special wool programme in your washing machine. Prefer a cold wash and spin as low as possible.

3. Do not twist the garment to spin it
After machine or hand washing, don't twist it forcefully to wring it out. And don't hang it on a line to dry! Instead, place it gently on a towel (like a burrito!), press gently to extract as much water as possible and leave it to dry flat on a dry towel.
After drying, some aficionados prefer to use a towel to dry their clothes. After drying, some aficionados iron their cashmere garments with a steam iron or steam steamer. This procedure will help the fibres to straighten and restore a soft look to your cashmere garments.
4. Do not hang the garment in your wardrobe
Another sine qua non condition for preserving your love affair with your cashmere jumper: place it gently in your wardrobe and definitely don't hang it on a hanger. This will prevent it from warping.
To keep moths away, consider placing lavender sachets or cedar wood nearby.
5. Use a lint razor
Sometimes woollen garments pellet, meaning that little balls of wool form. This is not serious. There are lint combs and razors that will do you a favour. Your garment will be restored to its original appearance.
