Camping with babies: So you are well equipped

Sleeping in a tent with a newborn baby? It's actually possible. As an experienced camper mum, I'll tell you here what you shouldn't forget under any circumstances.

If you go camping with your baby, you can look forward to an intensive, enjoyable time. Babies don't need much and are more relaxed when camping than some toddlers. So that you don't have to cut your camping holiday short early, here are a few tips for products that you should definitely have with you.

Warm and safe bedding

Of course, your baby must not freeze. The cold creeps into the tent from the ground. It is therefore very important that your baby lies on a cold-repellent surface

The way I did it was to put the little one in the carrycot of the pushchair - thanks to the design with two metal bars, it floated in the air and was therefore not in contact with the ground at all. There was also a sleeping mat underneath.

If the carrycot of your pram is not suitable, you will need another cot with walls as an alternative - this will prevent your baby from rolling through the tent or accidentally covering him or her up. If necessary, a cosy laundry basket will also do the trick.

Cosy clothes for cold nights

Warm clothing is just as important as an insulating base layer. Because it can get really cold at night on the campsite. I definitely recommend buying a sleeping bag with long sleeves, a permeable hat and warm tights

Of course, babies should not be overdressed. The best place to check this is your baby's neck: if they are sweating there or feel particularly warm, they may be overdressed.

Foldable bowl

A collapsible washing-up bowl has also proven to be very practical. The unfamiliar and sometimes noisy sanitary facilities on campsites can be a major stress factor for babies. Can - but doesn't have to be. With the folding bowl, you can give your baby a quick bath or splash around in the tent.

Don't give bacteria a chance

If you're not breastfeeding your child and you're out and about for several days, you'll need to sterilise bottles, dummies and the like. Unfortunately, I haven't found a practical magic device for this in our shop - and it's not even necessary. All you need is a cooker (or alternatively the kitchen at the campsite) and a pot. You need to boil the bottles in water for at least five minutes, after which they are sterile.

Have fun!

That's actually it. Without these things, I would hate to send you on a camping holiday with your newborn baby. You can certainly take numerous other gadgets with you, but if you like to pack light, you are well advised to take the above items. I can definitely recommend sun protection for babies and mosquito repellent - even if you would probably have them with you anyway. A foldable changing mat is also worth its weight in gold. If that sounds like too many bells and whistles, just take an old towel with you.
