5 interior design objects...(part 4)

Why does everything look so perfect in interior design magazines and books? Because decorators have been there. Just like in a fashion magazine, they highlight the furniture before a photo shoot. And it works in your home too.

What looks obvious in a photo actually requires preparation time, a concept and a lot of staff - photographers, decorators and assistants - especially for publications relating to flats and houses. These professionals work together to personalise and enhance rooms. Here are a few tips you can use in your own home.

1. Mirror, my beautiful mirror

Style is born of surprise, taking shape around mirrors, objects and furniture that we take care to show off from different angles. A short while ago, in fact, I introduced you to some decorating techniques that apply this adage. You probably think that opting for a particular object is enough. Well no, interior design pros like me will tell you otherwise, and there's nothing to do with ego here. Each of the rooms in my flat has a mirror: in the entrance hall, it not only allows me to take a look at the other spaces, but also to create a mise en abîme. Because of this, don't hesitate to choose several different models!

More interesting than a white wall: a mirror can have a spectacular effect.

2. Layered lighting

Decorators and interior architects use different light sources and shadow effects to give the room a particular look. Homogeneous lighting adds no atmosphere and emphasises the two-dimensional appearance of your interior. To remedy this, combine floor lamps and table lamps and position them so that they stand on their own. And in the evening, a few candles will complete this light relief already in place.

3. The best is the enemy of the good

Because it's all about the right mix, decorators remove the superfluous from the picture. I'm sure there's one or other trinket in your home that you've seen enough of. From time to time, I go to the local flea market where I leave what I no longer use, in the hope that these things will find a taker.

4. Trust yourself

Opt for a style that lends itself to smiles, but subtly! How do you achieve this? It's quite simple, thanks to an accessory that rivals boldness. Some designers play with animal motifs, but without going overboard into kitsch. My 'pet', a silver plastic bird, is also a motion detector. Perched on the windowsill, it makes my guests smile from time to time.

5. Add texture

To enhance your interior, there's nothing better than different structures. To do this, you'll need to play with surfaces and patterns: curtains that let light through on the one hand, and captivate the eye on the other, especially because of the fabric.

The combination of different materials brings change to the room...
