3 ugly-but-pretty alternatives to Crocs

Crocs are cult, no question. But here are some water-resistant plastic alternatives that give them a run for their money – and make you stand out from the crowd.
Quirky shoes have become increasingly popular in recent years, be it classics such as the Birkenstock Boston, viral models like the giant bright red boots by Mschf, or hybrids that take some getting used to like the New Balance sneaker-loafers. But the title of most famous ugly shoes probably still lies with Crocs. Undeniably ugly, these slip-ons are also incredibly iconic.
If you’re not totally sold on Crocs, but they do appeal to you, or if you already own some and want to add more plastic clogs to your wardrobe, here are three alternatives. They’re a little less mainstream, but just as water-resistant, easy to clean and comfy.
1. The Merrell Hydro Moc

The New York Times once described the futuristic Hydro Mocs from US brand Merrell as «Crocs gone wild». Like so many other shoes currently surrounded in hype, they’ve made their way from the outdoors into the world of fashion. The model was originally marketed as a water shoe, but is now at least as much at home in the city as it is in a kayak. And it’s no wonder; with its sneaker-like silhouette, the shoe looks particularly good in streetwear looks.
The Hydro Moc are made of EVA foam, and they’re just as light as Crocs. The raised heel and strap provide good support, while the cushioned midsole ensures comfort even when walking for long periods.
2. The Keen Shanti

Like Merrell, the US outdoor brand Keen has become integral to the gorpcore and streetwear scene. Its slip-on model, Shanti, wasn’t designed for strenuous activities, but for chilling. The shoe is supposed to allow for optimal foot relaxation.

The shock-absorbing, curved insole hugs your foot snugly, while the generous toe section allows you to spread your toes and the textured footbed lightly massages your feet. The Shanti are also made from EVA foam and are even lighter than comparable models from Merrell and Crocs – perfect for days when you’d rather not wear shoes at all.
3. The Birkenstock Super Birki

The Super Birki from Birkenstock might not be as light and airy as the previously mentioned shoes, but they’re all the more robust for it. The shoe was designed for working environments where durable, easy-care and comfortable footwear is required, such as in the kitchen, hospital or garden. However, many people now also wear the Super Birki simply as slippers or casual shoes.
The Super Birki are made of water and dirt-repellent polyurethane and can be washed at up to 60 degrees. The removable, anatomically shaped cork-latex footbed can be washed at 30 degrees – and you can even get replacement soles.
