Birkenstock "Boston": A shoe that outlasts trends

The Birkenstock clog literally flooded social media in 2022 and was sold out almost everywhere. This year, it's still riding the hype wave - but fortunately it's no longer quite so hard to come by.

A hyped product often experiences a meteoric rise - and an equally rapid fall shortly afterwards. When it comes to clothing and accessories in particular, the overrepresentation on social media and on the streets can quickly lead to people getting tired of them in no time at all. So that the once trendy piece looks unoriginal just one season later.

Not so with the "Boston" from Birkenstock. Although the mix of clogs and flip-flops seemed to be everywhere two years ago, this has done nothing to dampen the popularity of the slippers. They are still holding their own as an ugly shoe favourite this year.

The "Boston" does not follow trends

The model, which is worn as both a slipper and a street shoe, was launched back in 1977 - and has survived a boom or two in its almost 50 years of existence. In other words, even if the latest hype levels off, the "Boston" is still considered a solid classic rather than an outdated microtrend.

After all, the shoe has looked the same for half a century and has never been carried away by trends. So if you like the Birkenstock clog but aren't sure whether its time has passed: its comfort and authenticity make it timeless.

Taupe colour available again

When I reported on the "Boston" trend two years ago, the shoe was sold out in a variety of colours pretty much everywhere. For a while, the popular taupe colourway could only be found on second-hand portals with a large portion of luck and at a steep price. The availability of the iconic slippers has now improved somewhat. Although the taupe flagship is still a rare commodity, it is still available directly from Birkenstock at the end of April.

If you want to stand out from the crowd, I would advise you to be open to other designs anyway. A dove blue model with a braided strap is currently on my wishlist. I also find eye-catching colours such as red and pink or calmer tones such as olive green interesting. And you can never go wrong with black anyway. If you like it a little fluffier and want to wear your "Bostons" in spring and autumn in particular, you might like the lined version.

Has endless love for shoulder pads, Stratocasters and sashimi, but a limited tolerance for bad impressions of her Eastern Swiss dialect.
