There’s no bottle I’d rather be on than this one

Translation: Eva Francis

My new water bottle has succeeded in doing what neither an alarm clock nor an app has managed in the past – making me drink enough water. How? It’s simple.

I’m triumphant! I finally manage to drink two litres of water a day, often even three. You’re unimpressed? I get it. But it’s been a long and winding road for me. How did I manage to change my habits? Not with a fancy trick, I’m afraid to say.

The method that helped me reach my daily water intake target is as boring as a sip of water. But it’s beautiful, too. It’s my new Asmi water bottle with a pink and turquoise colour gradient that I recently got for my birthday.

Motivational quotes

What’s more important than the bottle’s looks is what’s written on it: useful time stamps that remind me to drink regularly and motivational quotes to encourage me.

The one-litre bottle literally becomes a motivation coach:

  • 8 a.m./2 p.m.: «Get started»
  • 9 a.m./3 p.m.: «Remember your goal»
  • 10 a.m./4 p.m.: «Keep chugging»
  • 11 a.m./5 p.m.: «Don’t give up»
  • 12 p.m./6 p.m.: «Almost there»
  • 1 p.m./7 p.m.: «You did it»

In other words, I should have consumed at least one decilitre of water by eight in the morning. At 1 p.m., I’ve almost emptied the bottle and am scheduled to refill and start the second full bottle at 2 p.m. By 7 p.m., I should have emptied this second bottle, reaching my goal water intake of two litres.

I really do catch myself checking whether I’m on track several times a day – and being happy with myself when I’m ahead of my goal. My day starts before 8 a.m. and ends after 7 p.m., so I usually end up drinking as much as three litres of water. This is necessary, too, as I work out a lot and teach group fitness.

Two litres is an often-stated number. However, this is only partially true. How much liquid we really need is very individual and depends on many factors such as age, lifestyle, environmental influences and physical characteristics. This was the finding of an international research team led by Yosuke Yamada from the Japanese National Institute of Health and Nutrition in Tokyo who tested more than 5,000 people. Two litres may even be too much for many people in Central Europe. According to the 2022 study, adults, namely men between 20 and 30 and women between 20 and 55, have the highest water turnover.

I haven’t always been good at staying hydrated. In fact, I used to have good days when I drank two litres and bad days when I forgot to drink entirely and a headache in the evening reminded me that I’d neglected my water intake.

I’ve tried an app that reminded me to drink at regular intervals. Didn’t work for me. Why? Well, firstly, I don’t want to get any more push notifications on my smartphone. Secondly, I don’t want to be forced to manually confirm that I’ve had my glass of water several times a day. I also tried setting an alarm to remind me to drink water. That was even worse. It went off a grand total of two times before I got annoyed and deactivated it.

What else is great about this bottle

The subtle and cute reminders on my new bottle work much better for me. But what else does this bottle offer apart from motivating me and looking good? Well, let me put it this way: it’s a water bottle – and it does what a water bottle is supposed to do.

It has a capacity of 1 litre and is leakproof thanks to a locking mechanism that keeps it securely closed. The hinged mouthpiece is connected to a straw in the bottle and is located under a lid that pops open when you press the button on the cap.

The bottle’s made of plastic, but doesn’t smell of plastic or chemicals. According to the manufacturer, it’s BPA-free, so it doesn’t contain the plasticiser bisphenol A. I could attach a strap around the neck of the bottle, but I don’t because I always carry it in my rucksack.

My verdict: big in size and effect

The Asmi bottle has been my constant companion since the beginning of the year – at home, at the (home) office and during workouts. Of course my friends and family tease me for taking it with me anywhere I go. Having said that, I don’t actually take it everywhere. Why? Well, it’s definitely not handy. It couldn’t be with its large capacity.

But I can live with that. After all, this bottle’s managed to do what neither the app nor the alarm clock could. All while looking fabulous. The only downer’s that I can’t sleep through the night anymore since I’ve started drinking more. I need to get up to pee most nights.

You’ll find numerous adaptations of the motivational water bottle online. We offer the Asmi model in several colours. Due to high demand, the bottle’s currently sold out (as of 10 February). More are on their way.
