Board games are the antidote to our collective digital addiction

Translation: Katherine Martin

In a world dominated by screens, board games offer a real escape. They strengthen our connection to other people, challenge us intellectually and bring us and our fellow players into the here and now. This is my ode to the world’s greatest hobby.

Picture this. You and your friends or family are huddled around a table, with a board game in the middle. You’re all laughing and chatting, time seeming to stand still. Sound nostalgic? Maybe. But I’m telling you, board games are the boost we all need. And in today’s hyper-connected world, we need it more than ever.

Why? Because board games bring us together in a way that no social media platform ever could. They challenge you, teach you patience and show you the value of real, undivided attention.

More than just a pastime

Board games don’t just give your brain a work out. They’re like treasure chests waiting to be opened. A trove of puzzles, strategies and challenges to sharpen your mind and spark your creativity. Whether it’s developing the perfect strategy in The Settlers of Catan or unmasking the culprit in Cluedo, board games turn you into a detective, strategist and mini empire builder. And as you navigate your way through these various game worlds, something wonderful happens. You laugh. You get riled up. Whatever happens, you feel emotions.

Board games are like a social experiment that almost always succeeds. They transform fleeting acquaintances into lively conversation partners, and old friends into loyal comrades or healthy rivals. These games manage to send you on a mission together, whether it’s saving the world from a pandemic or building a medieval kingdom. As a result, they strengthen bonds between people, promote empathy and understanding and teach you to stay fair-minded, even when things get heated.

Being in the present moment

In our hectic world, board games are an invitation to press pause and enjoy the moment. They’re an antidote to constant information overload and digital fatigue. Board game nights force you to put down your smartphone, switch off your computer and concentrate completely on the here and now. These special moments of focus and relaxation are hard to come by these days. Board games, however, offer some welcome respite.

So, it’s time to dig your board games out of the cupboard, dust them off and roll the dice. Sit around a table with your friends or family and enjoy the present moment.

Now I want to hear what you think. Which board game means the most to you and why? Do you have a board game night favourite or a special memory you associate with a game? Share your stories and recommendations in the comments.
