Product details
England around 1860: Captain James Onedin (Peter Gilmore) uses his last money to purchase the ocean-going schooner Charlotte Rhodes. Part of the business is to marry Anne Webster (Anne Stallybrass), the
daughter of the previous owner. But to realize his dream of owning his own fleet of cargo ships, James Onedin will use any means necessary. Anne, on the other hand, wants to be more to him than an unwelcome appendage. With patience and respect she tries to conquer his heart after all. But women are not welcome on board, Onedin and his first mate Mr Baines (Howard Lang) agree. However, Anne wins this trial of strength, and the two men actually go on a big ride.
With James she also married his family and they are more than complicated. Sister Isabel (Jessica Benton) throws herself from one affair into the next and thus always causes anger and suffering. Robert Onedin (Brian Rawlinson) on the other hand, loses almost his entire existence due to James' financial escapades.
In other words, a family in which a lot of dynamite provides extremely exciting entertainment.
More than 20 years of the Onedins' moving family history are recounted in this loving BBC film adaptation from the 1970s. It offers not only an insight into the joys and sorrows, love and vices of this seafaring and merchant clan, but also an interesting look back at the time of the industrial revolution.
