The Book Thief

In 1939, Nazi Germany. Death has a lot to do and a weakness for Liesel Meminger. At the grave of her little brother, Liesel steals her first book. With the Gravedigger's Handbook, she learns to read and begins stealing books wherever she can find them: from the snow, the flames of the Nazis, and the mayor's library. A deep love for books and words is awakened in her, one that does not leave her even as the world around her crumbles to ashes. Liesel sees the Jews being taken to Dachau, she experiences the bombing nights over Munich - and she survives because Death has taken her to his heart.
