At the age of 19, Bavaria's fairytale king Ludwig II ascends to the throne. However, his interest is less in politics than in art and music. He admires the composer Richard Wagner and becomes his greatest patron.
Less and less he takes care of his government business. He withdraws into the arts and indulges in homoerotic fantasies. He spends vast sums of money building his dream castles. Only with his cousin Sissi the lonely monarch finds understanding.
