The aircraft carrier Akagi was one of the most important ships of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. It was part of the 1st Air Fleet of the Japanese Navy. Akagi was one of six aircraft carriers that participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, which triggered the war in the Pacific. It also took part in the Battle of Midway, where it was sunk by American planes in June 1942. Its sinking was a pivotal moment that negatively influenced the course of the war for Japan.
