But as the premiere of the play approaches relentlessly, Riggan's lead actor is injured in a crazy accident during rehearsals and must be quickly replaced. At the suggestion of lead actress Lesley and the urging of his best friend and producer Jake, Riggan reluctantly hires Mike Shiner - an unpredictable guy, but a guarantee for plenty of ticket sales and rave reviews. As he prepares for his stage debut, he must deal not only with his girlfriend, co-star Laura, and his daughter and assistant Sam, who has just come out of rehab, but also with his ex-wife Sylvia, who occasionally drops by to set things right in her favor.
