The Friederichstraße train station was also partially destroyed, and the expertise of engineer Robert is needed for reconstruction. Meanwhile, Lilli, the daughter of Robert's deceased wife Luise, has twins. Anna and Carla grow up with their single mother in post-war East Berlin. While Friedrichstrasse becomes the border station between East and West and the adjacent "Palace of Tears" a symbol of the German-German divide, for a long time the whole thing is just like a game for the twins. They have fun fooling the border guards while wearing the same clothes, until Carla gets serious and decides to flee to the West ...
