Ödön von Horváth did not live long. In 1938, at just 36 years old, he was killed in Paris on the Champs-Élysées by a falling branch. The last novel of the Austro-Hungarian writer, "A Child of Our Time," is set during a dictatorship and between two wars. It tells the story of a nameless soldier who completely identifies with the system. The individual does not matter to him; he is merely part of the so-called body of the people. Horváth's then-partner, actress Wera Liessem, reads this piece, in which the inhumanity of the regime is fully revealed.
