Juniperus chinensis – Chinese Juniper, approximately 20 years old, total height (including pot) 30 cm, plastic pot 23 cm, garden bonsai evergreen.
Juniperus chinensis is an evergreen conifer native to East Asia.
The juniper as a bonsai is very popular and is excellent for deadwood designs (Jin and Shari).
Care: The Chinese juniper prefers a sunny location outdoors year-round. If temperatures drop below -10 °C in winter, the root ball should be protected. In very low temperatures, its foliage may discolor unattractively, but it will turn green again in spring. It likes well-draining soil, either pure or mixed with Akadama. Water it only when the soil is dry. Be sure to avoid waterlogging. When repotting, mix a handful of the old soil with mycorrhiza (white fungal network) into the new substrate. Fertilize with organic fertilizer starting in spring.
Design: To maintain and compact the shape of the foliage pads, the shoots that extend beyond the silhouette should be pinched throughout the growing season. It is important to pinch the green shoots with your fingertips, not to cut them with your nails or scissors, as this will cause the shoot tips to turn brown. Only use scissors or pruning shears when shoots need to be completely removed. The branches can be easily shaped with wire; for branches with rough bark, wrap the branch with protective tape before wiring.
