A harrowing reflection on the failure of the parties to the Middle East conflict to treat each other as equals, as partners on the path to peace, rather than as enemies and genocides.
The founding of the state of Israel in 1948 triggered the Nakba (Arabic for "catastrophe"): the expulsion of the Palestinian people, which created fault lines that continue to exist today in a violent and tragic way. In the decades that followed, while the Berlin Wall fell and South Africa abolished apartheid, the Israeli government and the PLO rejected every opportunity for reconciliation.
Raja Shehadeh, human rights lawyer and Palestine's greatest living writer, shows that this does not mean that the two nations cannot work together as partners on the road to peace. On the contrary, if this conflict is not to end in mutual genocide, they must work together, against the extremists on both sides.
This book is divided into two sections: The first, "How did we get to this point?", is a revised version of a lecture Shehadeh gave at a peace conference in Kyoto in 2016; the second, "The war in Gaza, 2023-2024", describes in gruesome, anatomical detail the horrors of life in Gaza, with the author's tone veering between anger and despair.
In its graceful, harrowingly observant style, this work is a fresh perspective in a time of great need.
