Every year, the garden newspaper editors receive impressive photos in which a sunflower towers over the grandchild three to four times over. This flower makes us all smile, when it "shines" over to us from fields or over a fence, we feel it is looking at us - and we beam back. No other flower embodies light and warmth like the sunflower. It belongs in every farmer's garden and promises a rich harvest in many late summer bouquets as a companion to ripe grain and the first fruits. It is even omnipresent on our menu as an ingredient from breakfast cereal to evening sunflower bread and also provides food for birds in winter. So it's time to take a closer look at this old cultivated plant from the New World, because it has much more to offer.
