The art of hair braiding
Whether in literature, religion, the healing arts or as jewelry - hair has always played a central role. The use of hair for art objects can be proven since the end of the baroque period. Jakob Schiess from Appenzell, who is known far beyond the borders of the canton, is the youngest hair braiding artist still active. Since a traffic accident in 1998, he has devoted himself to this passion with great skill. At his suggestion, the historian and Germanist Johannes Schläpfer has written a book about the craft of hair braiding cultivated by Schiess.
In the book, the individual steps from the hair to the finished piece of jewelry are presented in words and pictures. At the same time, the author describes the significance of hair throughout history, explains the cultural-historical background of the craft, and portrays both living and deceased hair braiding artists.
