In this book, which can now be called almost classical, Gerhardt makes the 'principle of individuality' the foundation of a moral theory. In ten chapters he examines a wide variety of self-relationships, from self-knowledge to self-confidence and self-realization. It is an "attempt to define the relationship between morality and life more precisely", an attempt that "starts with the experience of life, where the moral collisions are ignited", as the German newspaper DIE ZEIT wrote in its very positive review of the first edition. For this second edition, the book was reviewed and a new epilogue was added.
