The Catholic Church is strongly influenced by its law. Canon law has contributed to disciplining and has made possible a globally uniform organizational structure, but has also given the Church a hard, centralized and juridical face. This introduction illuminates historical and theological backgrounds as well as legal and practical contexts, thus enabling a deeper understanding of the applicable law of the Church. Unresolved problems are not concealed, and legal freedoms become visible. Topics are: church membership, sacraments of initiation, church structures and ministries, marriage and the law on state-church-relations (Switzerland and Germany), with which the state has a decisive influence on church order.
