Product details

A foggy Baltic Sea island in the mid-nineties. On the last ferry to Niewetow on a rainy night, Daniel Brandenburg encounters death for the first time. Then it seems to lurk around every corner: returning to his boarding house in a former NVA barracks, Brandenburg finds a corpse in the harbour basin. In contrast to the investigating inspector Edgar Krummnow, the budding journalist does not believe it is an accident, but an angel of death at work, especially as more deaths follow: an old woman is scared to death, a drunk drowns in the bathtub, another falls down the stairs. Brandenburg conducts his own investigation and has no idea that he himself is a decoy.

In his remake of Ray Bradbury's classic "Death is a Lonely Business," Karsten Stegemann transfers the morbid post-war atmosphere in Venice Beach, California, to the foggy island town of Niewetow and describes the disintegration of a community in the years after German reunification, the mood of dissolution and sale in the northeast of the former GDR.

"What Stegemann pulls off is a subtly crafted horror show in which it remains in doubt for a long time whether there is a murderer or not, or what is happening at all. One state is gone, the other state hasn't really arrived yet - in the vacuum the horror, the uncanny, cavorts in a suspense scenario of the finest kind." - Thomas Wörtche, CULTurMAG.
