Product details
The Basel couple Annie and Oskar Müller-Widmann began collecting Expressionist art at an early age, and towards the end of the 1920s also discovered abstract art for themselves. The couple's house on the Bruderholz in Basel was a meeting place for the outstanding protagonists of modernism, including Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp. Oskar and Annie Müller-Widmann became close friends of the two and the first and, for years, most important collectors of their works.
Now published for the first time in this volume are the letters and postcards Sophie Taeuber-Arp wrote to the Müller-Widmann couple between 1932 and 1942. They deal with the artistic work, exhibitions and other projects, but also with private circumstances of the artist's life. The complete collection is an extremely important testimony to the life and work of Sophie Taeuber-Arp. All postcards are reproduced as facsimiles, the texts of all letters and cards are transcribed in the original language as well as in German translation. Walburga Krupp, the leading expert on Sophie Taeuber-Arp's work, has annotated the letters and elaborates on the special features of this correspondence in an essay.
