A headstrong young girl in 14th century Norway, the radiant favorite of her father and promised by him to the son of a neighboring farmer. A life like in the book, until death creeps into the life of the young Kristin Lavranstochter and a brutal murder snatches her childhood sweetheart. She flees to the monastery - and falls head over heels in love with the handsome Erlend von Husaby, who has a bad reputation. Against all odds and despite almost killing her beloved father, she decides to live this love.
Sigrid Undset's great strength is characterization, and so we laugh and cry, suffer and love with the lovely Kristin, a strong woman who takes on and can take on 14th century Norwegian male society. It is only logical that Undset was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for the trilogy.
