What kind of relationships do people have who have neither children nor relatives due to rising divorce rates and declining birth rates? Who do you fall back on when the family fails to provide security in old age? What form of social relationships do online contacts in social networks or relationships at work correspond to in the modern working world? Friendship seems the obvious answer to these questions. This volume is the first to provide an introduction to the sociology of friendship. The contributions offer an overview of sociological basic knowledge about friendship and insights into the variety of friendship phenomena.
