The portrait of a small town where otherness is suspect per se
Gunthrum, Nebraska, 1985. It is the first weekend of hunting season, and the mentally impaired Hal, farmhand on Alma and Clyle's farm and in a sense their adopted son, goes hunting with friends. That same weekend, a young local girl disappears without a trace. When Hal returns from his trip, there is blood in the truck and a dent in the grille, and Hal's explanations leave much to be desired. Soon people in Gunthrum begin to speculate. And little by little, the question of what Hal could be capable of becomes more and more urgent for Alma and Clyle - because who else could be guilty of this crime?
