Dog and hare are like cat and mouse, at least in the idyllic Hummelhausen an der Hummel. The enmity between the families dog and rabbit seems to be eternal - until it turns out differently. It is a moral story that Rotraut Susanne Berner tells: a plea for tolerance with a lot of wit in words and pictures. Nobody really knows when and why the quarrel between the families dog and rabbit began, but it is certain: Dogs and rabbits want nothing to do with each other. The dogs think that the rabbits should get something behind their spoons, and the rabbits think that dogs are dog mean. At the annual big race on the Hasenheide, Hugo Hund and Hannes Hase are the main opponents. They run head to head for miles until they can't go any further because a terrible thunderstorm is coming down and lightning strikes to their right and left.
