Product details

Richard Harding Davis (1864 - 1916) grew up in Philadelphia as the son of a newspaper publisher. Writing was in his blood, as his mother, Rebecca Harding Davis, was a famous author. After a lackluster school experience and an equally uninspiring college education, the always fashionable and elegantly dressed young man worked as a journalist for the Philadelphia Inquirer and later for the New York Sun, finding his life's calling, even though he was continually drawn to narrative literature. His book "Gallegher and Other Stories" was published in 1891 in New York and attracted attention with its innovative, realistic narrative style. After reporting from many historical hotspots as a war correspondent, he became known as the "lion among reporters" and evolved into a cult figure. He published various novels, collections of short stories, and also wrote plays for Broadway. Hans-Christian Oeser is a translator of numerous literary works from the English-speaking world, including those by Maeve Brennan, Sebastian Barry, and Patrick Pearse, as well as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Mark Twain, and many others. He is the author of several books on Irish literature and has received multiple awards for his translations. He lives and works in Berlin and Dublin.
