Good, fast clumping cat litter is essential. I have tried quite a few, nothing comes close to the Everclean. It is important that as much moisture as possible is absorbed quickly (in 1 minute), otherwise everything will be smeared. Then it is clear that it will start to smell. In addition, change the bag once a day and clean the toilet with wet wipes. That way it won't smell too bad in your house either. For your information, I have 2 cats that use the toilet.
