New and completely translated. The protagonist of the novel is Minutus Lausus Manilianus, who tells of his life in his memoirs. Raised as a half-orphan in Antioch, he moves to Rome with his father when he is young. There he befriends the only slightly younger Lucius, the later Emperor Nero, under whose rule he goes through the usual official career and makes a career in Rome. In the process, Minutus comes into close contact with the first Christians, who are currently developing from a Jewish sect into an independent religious community. He experiences the discord between Nero's power-hungry mother Agrippina and her son and witnesses the first persecutions of Christians under Emperor Nero after the great conflagration in Rome and the turmoil following Nero's death. Soon afterwards Vespasian takes over the reign, with Minutus an old acquaintance.
