Sonos is presenting its first battery-powered speaker, the Move, at IFA. It is waterproof and receives Bluetooth. There are three new speakers from Sonos in total.

The Sonos Move is not entirely unexpected. It has long been rumoured that the speakers would soon be available as a takeaway. Nevertheless, the new model promises a lot: the battery is replaceable and Sonos also includes a charging station for your home.

You have to carry three kilograms if you want to go outside with the Move. The dimensions are 24 x 16 x 12.6 centimetres. Sonos has not yet provided specific information on battery capacity. In addition to the charging station, the box can also be charged via USB-C. You should be able to listen to music for around ten hours on a single charge. According to Sonos, standby lasts up to five days.

So that you can carry the speaker in a reasonably smart way, Sonos has integrated a kind of carrying handle on the back.

Dancing in the shower or the garden hose

The Move is designed to be weatherproof and drop-proof. It is IP56 certified. This means it is protected against dust and strong water jets. So singing in the shower is no problem and the garden hose shouldn't harm the Move either

So you don't have to stop dancing, the Move can also be controlled by voice command with Google Assistant and Alexa. And of course with the Sonos app, on the speaker itself and Apple AirPlay 2. You can stream via Bluetooth 4.2 and WiFi.

With four far-field microphones integrated into the speakers, the Move can also read you things like the news or tomorrow's weather.

Sonos promises deep bass

Sonos Trueplay Tuning is also built into the Move. The function is designed to adapt the sound to the ambient conditions. According to Sonos, when the speaker is moved, the new playback conditions are determined via your mobile's microphones and playback is optimised as a result. However, this is only possible with iOS devices.

In addition, Sonos promises particularly deep bass and a wide soundscape with the Move - our test will show whether this is the case.

Also new: Sonos one SL and Port

Sonos also presented the successor to the Play:1 at IFA: The Sonos One SL. Unlike the other One models, the SL has no built-in microphones - so it cannot be controlled by voice. The built-in speaker technology is the same in the Play 1, the One and the One SL. The One SL can be used with a normal One as a stereo pair.

The Port is also new: it is the successor to the Connect. The Port can be used to integrate record players, CD players or similar into the Sonos system. You can control the Port using voice commands.

The new dividers can be pre-ordered from us from 12 September. According to our Category Management, the first deliveries will take place around two weeks later.

Testing devices and gadgets is my thing. Some experiments lead to interesting insights, others to demolished phones. I’m hooked on series and can’t imagine life without Netflix. In summer, you’ll find me soaking up the sun by the lake or at a music festival.
