Lots of choice and few nerves: find the right mascara

The direct route to the ideal mascara often takes detours. Bad purchases are practically pre-programmed - unless you pay attention to a few things.

"Rest in peace". This inscription could be on the drawer where I keep the mascaras that have done me no service. I know I should actually give them a trip to the infinite depths of my rubbish bin. But because hope dies last and it happens from time to time that I change my mind about a product, I keep bitter disappointments within my reach. Marie Kondo sends her regards and I say hello back with a caught look.

Who has the choice...

I've picked out a few products from the endless range on sale that might meet your needs. However, I would like to emphasise that the search for the perfect mascara is a personal matter and even I cannot guarantee that you will find your happy ending within my selection. You have to be willing to take a bit of a risk.

Volume

Mascaras that create volume usually have a brush head made of tightly bound hairs. They surround the lashes from all sides, making them thicker and appear denser. You can apply several layers on top of each other to enhance this effect. Make sure that you never let the individual layers dry completely before starting the next one.

Waterproof volume:
Many mascaras are available in a waterproof version. These can withstand gym sessions, a dip in the pool, spontaneous hot flashes and hot summer days without smudging. However, they dry out the eyelashes, cause them to break off more quickly and are harder to remove. You won't get far with a normal micellar water. Instead, reach for a two-phase make-up remover. Its oil content ensures that you remove waterproof products and care for your eyelashes at the same time. Alternatively, you can use an oil cleanser or some coconut oil.

Length & separation

Rubber brush heads can help you avoid sticky lashes. In some cases, they sting unpleasantly, but the stiff material acts like a comb that neatly separates the individual hairs. This makes them look longer but still natural. Be careful with slightly curved rubber brushes: although they adapt perfectly to your lash line thanks to their shape, their curvature favours slight clumping.

Of course, there are also bonded brush hairs that provide more length. In some cases, these can form small clumps at the tips of the lashes. I personally don't mind this because it makes my lashes look longer. If you don't like this look, I would stick with a rubber brush.

Commit to colour

If black is too boring for you, colourful mascaras offer you the opportunity to experiment with colours. You can apply them to just the lower lash line as an eye-catcher or go all out. If black looks too harsh on your eyes, brown is a soft alternative. It emphasises your lashes and looks much more natural.

What else you should consider

No matter what effect you're going for, I recommend using a narrow brush for small eyes or short lashes. This way, you can easily apply mascara from the root upwards without risking panda eyes. I personally prefer those that are tapered and pointed. This also allows me to reach the fine lashes at the inner corner of the eye.

If you're lucky, you'll find a mascara that gives you length and volume. In my experience, however, this is rarely the case. You can help with a white primer. It gives you length and density that you can build on with your mascara. Simply apply it, allow it to dry slightly and then go over it with your mascara. This base makes the black (or the colours) shine more intensely. The product also lasts longer on the lashes without flaking.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
