From car fragrance trees to shower gel - we have tested the Yankee Candles

Yankee Candles are available in a wide variety of scents: Moonlight, summer night and fresh laundry are just some of the curious odours. What does moonlight smell like? We asked ourselves the same question and took a sniff of the Yankee Candles for you.

Together with four brave colleagues (Natalie, Phil, Nadine and Aurel), I took on the exotic scents of Yankee Candles. We found out for you what moonlight and soft sheets smell like. Whether you want to have such a scent in your home is up to you. But we can at least tell you what the scents reminded us of.

Aftershave

We couldn't quite agree. We all recognised a rose scent. What is a typical bathroom scent for me, smells like "grandma's rocking chair" for Nathalie. The men recognised more of a rose soap scent.

Chrome

Why would anyone want their home to smell of chrome steel? Fortunately, the candle doesn't really smell like that either. We were unable to clearly determine what. We smelled everything from lemongrass to "that typical scented candle scent that you put on" to the smell of the sea.

Hot cloth

The hot towel is actually the pleasantly warm cloth that is placed on your face during massages. We obviously don't know what it smells like. For us, it smelled like "Wöschchuchi", "fabric softener" and "Wöschmittel".

Fresh laundry

We agree on this one. This candle smells absolutely like fresh laundry. I think it's great and that's why I have it at home myself.

Sea salt

According to the men in our test group, this candle smells like a mixture of freshly cleaned floor and men's shower gel. For Nati and me, it smelled more like a fresh shave. Definitely a pleasant bathroom odour.

Moonlight

The moon just smells awful to me. For others, it smells like cheap, flowery perfume and "car fragrance trees".

Soft sheet

Definitely a very sweet fragrance. Smells such as "teeny perfume" or "Chilbi sugar paper" were identified.

Summer night

A summer night apparently smells of vanilla. At least this candle does. A vanilla bomb or as our boss said: "noble brothel".

Olives and thyme

Summery! Smells like a swimming pool, according to Phil. Or, to be more precise, like sun cream, sweets and flowers.

Conclusion

We found some of the fragrances really pleasant. Especially the less sweet ones like olive and thyme, hot towel and fresh laundry. But be sure to light them first. If you smell the candles directly, they are far too intense. When lit, the fragrance spreads discreetly throughout the room and doesn't smell like a typical scented candle at your grandma's house.
The Yankee Candles offer every imaginable fragrance. We haven't even tried the best ones yet. For example, Luxemburgerli or truffle. Crap. But that will come! Which Yankee Candle fragrance would you like us to try? Write it in the comments. If we have it in our range, we'll test the candle, of course.

I love black humour, my small collection of jackets, Red Bull, furniture, lie-ins, British accents, dogs, laughing until I cry, Polaroid cameras, full ice-hockey stadiums and that moment when the red lamp lights up behind the right goal. Singing songs loudly and out of tune (and busting some matching moves) is also something I enjoy – as is strumming around on my guitar.
