Orange Cream: Is the new Coca-Cola flavour coming to us?
by Patrick Vogt
No sooner have I admitted to being a sucker for soft drinks than a new flavour rocks up at my house: Fanta Tutti Frutti. My teammates and I tasted it and weren’t impressed.
Wow, that was quick! It was only recently that I wrote a piece about Coca-Cola Orange Cream in which I expressed my love of sweet fizzy drinks. Sadly, I haven’t had the chance to try the new Coke taste, as it’s currently reserved for the USA and Canada. Instead, my infatuation is bearing fruit in other ways.
While I’m trying to get my hands on Coca-Cola Orange Cream here, Fanta’s trying to sweeten my wait by sending me a whole sample pack of their newly launched flavour. Thanks a bunch! Sugar-free Fanta Tutti Frutti is a limited edition that’s «a tropical twist, […] of banana, peach, and pineapple» according to the media release for German-speaking countries.
Anything branded «Tutti Frutti» usually makes me cringe a little, but not because of Hugo Egon Balder or Little Richard. Rather, I consider it an iffy label. The type food manufacturers stick on a product when they don’t quite know where they’re going with the flavour. Unsurprisingly, this isn’t conducive to the taste.
But I’m always happy to be proven wrong, so I try to go into the Fanta Tutti Frutti tasting with an open mind. Admittedly, just like my teammates, I wasn’t able to shake all my scepticism.
To cut a long story short: our doubts were justified. No one in the group really liked Fanta’s new release. If anything, my colleague Luca’s and my judgement was probably the least harsh. Having said that, our «I’ve had worse» doesn’t mean we’re about to turn into Tutti Frutti guzzlers just yet. While Luca’s reminded of a certain energising soda pop from Austria, I struggle with that unpleasant lingering aftertaste of artificial sweeteners «zero» drinks often have.
Of the three fruit flavours it contains, banana is the dominant one – when you crack open the can and when you take a sip. I like bananas, so I’m not put off by that. But I’m soon sick of the taste, so definitely not going for a second can of Fanta Tutti Frutti. I can only make out a hint of peach, and fail to detect any pineapple.
Ramon’s happy with the first sip of fizz, but soon turns up his nose at the taste. With every further sip, his face turns into a grimace. Darina even starts clutching her stomach a few gulps in. Stefanie compares the flavour to fruit chews popular in German-speaking countries called «Lachgummis» by «nimm2». She also points out Fanta Tutti Frutti’s, erm, interesting colour.
So we put Fanta’s latest creation to the test and thought it was mediocre at best and god-awful at worst. But as the saying goes, one man’s meat is another man’s poison. So if Fanta Tutti Frutti has piqued your interest, why not give it a try? Worst case, you don’t like it. Best case, you’ve found your new favourite drink.
Fanta Tutti Frutti should soon be available from our range. Until then, you can enjoy Fanta’s more established editions, all of which I prefer to the latest one. As I said, you just can’t trust something branded Tutti Frutti.
