This summer, the heat is bound to come sooner or later! It's time to get a fan to keep you cool. "Kassensturz" and "Saldo" tested 12 fans and rated them according to 5 criteria. On the plus side, they all passed the test! What's more, the test shows that even small budgets can get their money's worth. Find out more about the test and the results, and let the winner convince you!

Fan systems tested

Standing fan: these set the air in motion with a propeller. These units are height-adjustable, but need a lot of space.

Column fan: they draw in air from behind and stir it with a cylinder to discharge it at the front. Column fans are smaller, slimmer than floor-standing fans, but are not height-adjustable.

Test criteria

The items were rated according to the following 5 criteria:

  1. Ventilation: how many cubic metres of air can the appliances move? Is the air released pleasant (40% of the score)
  2. Safety: can you touch the fan blades through the grill? Are there places where you can cut yourself or get stuck?(20% of the score)
  3. Quality: are the fans solid and of good quality? Do they fall over quickly (20% of the score)
  4. Usability: can the airflow be adjusted according to the user's needs? Are the units easy to install (10% of the score)
  5. Sound volume: how loud is the appliance at different speeds (10% of the score)

Result: "AM08" by Dyson is the winner!

No appliance failed the test. All of them cool sufficiently. However, depending on the placement of the appliance one or the other is more suitable: the fan is used in the bedroom? Then it must have a silent motor. Is it used in the office? Then the direction must be precise so that the cold air doesn't blow into your neighbour's neck. Find your model!

1st place: Dyson AM08

The Dyson device is the winner of the test. This fan boasts good quality and a very precisely adjustable airflow. It received a score of 5.5 and therefore a "Very Good" rating. What's more, this is a special model among stand-mounted fans: where other fans have an impeller, the Dyson has a hole. Its motor is built into the base. The air is accelerated and guided upwards where it is expelled through small holes on the sides of the circle.

Highly commended, score 5.5

Did you know?

  • Fans cool without lowering the room temperature. The flow of air accentuates our body's natural air conditioning: perspiration on the skin evaporates more quickly in the wind and can thus help to evacuate heat. That's why the cooling effect is more intense when you're already sweating slightly.
  • You can achieve optimum air circulation by positioning the fan in a corner of the room and directing the airflow towards the ceiling. If there is a cooler room next to the room to be cooled, then position the unit towards the door.
