E-bikes at Stiftung Warentest: Models with Bosch motors lead the field

The testers chased eleven e-bikes over the hills of Styria. The result: the six best models all have the same motor.

A "good" trekking e-bike has a Bosch drive - at least according to Stiftung Warentest. Eleven e-bikes with support up to 25 km/h were tested for the current issue of the consumer magazine. Eight models had the motor on the bottom bracket. On three models, the drive was installed directly on the rear axle, which makes the e-bikes cheaper. According to Stiftung Warentest, they cost between 1100 and 1600 euros. In the "Drive" and "Riding" test categories, however, the cheaper design was reflected in lower scores.

The trekking bikes with a mid-motor were rated better. Six of them received the overall rating of "good". The cheapest model with a mid-motor, the Viator 4.2i from Fischer, received a "satisfactory" and only just missed out on "good". And this despite the Bafang motor from Chinese production. It is cheaper than the Bosch motor from European production.

According to the test results, there is one clear requirement for a "good" trekking e-bike: it needs a Bosch motor, more specifically the CX/85 from the Performance Line. The report on the tests states that the Bosch motor adapts the support particularly well to the terrain and provides a "smooth riding experience". There is praise because the successful tuning eliminates the need to switch back and forth between the different support levels.

The six e-bikes with a "good" rating all come from brand manufacturers - and cost around 4000 euros. With a 1.8 on the Stiftung Warentest scale, the Kalkhoff Endeavour 5 Advance+ and the KTM Macina Gran 610 share the top spot.

The Cube Kathmandu Hybrid One 625, the Pegasus Premio Evo 10 Lite, the Kettler Quadriga CX10 LG 625 and the Hercules Futura Sport I-10 followed with scores between 2.0 and 2.4.

No winning model in the shop - unfortunately

Unfortunately, we do not currently have the models tested by Stiftung Warentest in the Galaxus range. Some of them have already been discontinued and have been replaced. Some of the marketplace retailers do not currently have the relevant models available.

The Macina 710 from KTM is currently available; it has improved features compared to the 610 model tested.

You can display all trekking e-bikes in the shop by selecting the appropriate filter - electric motor brand = Bosch. If you don't want to set this yourself, I have the link for you here.
