The new Dyson is stronger and better for your health – but also more expensive
by Lorenz Keller
The Dyson V8 is coming to Switzerland. The cordless vacuum cleaner is available from 400 francs and is reduced to the essentials: suction power and a clever system.
What the Community repeatedly criticises about Dyson is the price. The latest Dyson Gen5detect Absolute, for example, costs 800 francs. Not everyone can or wants to spend that much money on a hoover. Also because features such as powerful suction power, the green laser to indicate dust or the measurement of the particles picked up are not needed at all.
Dyson wants to win over precisely these customers, who simply want a vacuum cleaner without all the bells and whistles, in Switzerland too. The entry-level model into the Dyson world is already available abroad, and the V8 is now officially on sale here. There used to be entry-level models like this, but now Dyson is bringing them back.
In the absolute basic version, the V8 costs 400 francs. The set includes the new electric brush, which is specially designed for vacuuming up hair. Plus two accessories, namely a combi nozzle with brush and a crevice nozzle.
For an additional 100 francs, the V8 is available as an Absolute version with additional accessories. These are: a second large electric brush especially for parquet and tiled floors, a small electric brush for pet hair and two additional nozzles in different sizes.
When I compare the top-of-the-range Gen5Detect model with the new entry-level vacuum cleaner, I can already see clear differences on the data sheet. Not just in terms of features such as the laser or particle sensor, which the cheaper model lacks. In terms of suction power, for example, the Gen5Detect delivers more than twice as much, 280 watts compared to 115 watts. The battery life is also similar: up to 70 minutes compared to 40 minutes.
Nevertheless, the suction power of the V8 should be sufficient in most situations. And the cheaper model also has advantages: At 2.5 kilograms, it is one kilogram lighter than the expensive version. What's more, at 72 decibels, it is even quieter than the Gen5Detect, which I already found to be quiet when I tested it.
In addition to the suction power, the Dyson qualities also include the easy-to-empty dust container. With the V8, you can hold it over the waste bin and at the touch of a button everything is emptied downwards.
All in all, the V8 offers the essential qualities of Dyson: suction power, a quiet motor and a clever system. The new vacuum cleaner will not have an easy time of it, as the competition is huge in the 350 to 450 francs price range.
I count over 80 models in our shop. If you search, you will find lighter models, longer battery life or accessories such as nozzles with LED light. For example, the Dreame R20, which I have already tested in detail.
Should I test the affordable Dyson in detail - or another model entirely? Let me know in the comments.
