Quality or price, or both? K-Tipp and "Kassensturz" have tested ten charcoal kettle barbecues for all those who get lost in the flood of kettle barbecues. You can find the test results from Kassensturz from 16 June 2020 for the kettle barbecues in the top five places here.

The test

A total of ten charcoal kettle barbecues, ranging in price from 30 to 370 francs, were tested. A practical and laboratory test was carried out by the PZT test institute in Wilhelmshaven (Germany). The appliances were tested for their robustness and user-friendliness. Furthermore, attention was paid to even heat distribution on the grill so that food could be served both on the outer edge and in the centre of the grill at the same time. Last but not least, we also looked at whether the grills could maintain a constant temperature and how quickly they heated up.

The following criteria were relevant for the test in the specified weighting:

  • Grilling (45%)
  • Safety (30%)
  • Robustness (20%)
  • Handling (5%)

The result

Of the ten appliances tested, all of the barbecues impressed in the most important criterion of barbecuing. Places 1 to 5 are shown below. The charcoal kettle barbecue from Napoleon took first place with an overall score of 5.4, narrowly missing out on the test rating of "very good". Although the barbecue is in the upper range in terms of price, it impressed in all test points. Its robustness with good material quality and long heat retention stood out. One disadvantage of this barbecue was its heavy weight of 30 kilograms.

The Outdoorchef Kensington 570C took second place with an overall score of 5.3. The kettle barbecue also impressed with its robustness and the good quality of its materials and workmanship. The Weber Master-Touch GBS E-5750 kettle barbecue came in third place with a score of 5.2. Its good heat distribution on the grill stood out in particular. At 18 and 19 kilograms, the Outdoorchef Kensington and Weber Master-Touch GBS E-5750 models are significantly lighter than the Napoleon kettle grill and are also priced lower.

In 4th and 5th place are the two kettle barbecues Jamestown Grill Dexter XL and Dancook Kettle Barbecue 1400. These two charcoal barbecues are priced slightly lower than the Napoleon, Outdoorchef and Weber brands, but still achieved an overall score of 5 and impressed the testers with their robustness.
