Advent calendar opened: practical gifts for pregnancy – well, first-time pregnancy at least

We tested out advent calendars so that you don't have to. We were allowed to open all the doors in October. That way, you know which calendar could be the right one for you.

A few weeks ago, we came up with a supposedly good idea: testing out advent calendars from our shop. The problem: we have 1,000 different ones available in our range. So, we decided to go with a random selection. Hit or miss?

vortageins Pregnancy Calendar / Countdown Box (Gifts for 24 weeks of pregnancy)

What does the manufacturer promise?

24 boxes with nice, useful gifts and practical information, entertaining stories and quotations about birth. Baby items are all in gender-neutral colours. It’s great that nothing’s unnecessarily gendered. A calendar in stereotypical pink for a girl or blue for a boy wouldn’t be right in 2021. The 24 gifts include basic equipment for the baby or the mother or parents that can be put to good use. So the calendar is mainly designed for first-time pregnancy.

What can it do?

There are 24 small gifts including a dummy, a muslin and stretch mark cream. A pregnant friend of mine found most of the gifts useful. But there are two or three filler items, including a useless keyring with a metal dummy and a badly finished children’s book. You’ll find the list of all the gifts here so there are no nasty surprises for the mum-to-be.

Who is it right for?

Families expecting their first baby. My friend was able to use a lot of the contents, but she already had a lot of the gifts from her first pregnancy, so the calendar would make a better present for first-time parents.

Is it worth the money?

For expectant parents who don’t yet have any (or many) baby items, definitely. If you’re already overwhelmed with gifts or you already have children, the calendar isn’t worth the price. Many of the gifts are really useful for your first child, but not as useful for the second because you only need to buy things like bath thermometers and buggy hooks once. You’d be better off saving the money.

Rating: 20 out of 24 doors for first-time parents, 10 out of 24 doors for subsequent pregnancies

When I flew the family nest over 15 years ago, I suddenly had to cook for myself. But it wasn’t long until this necessity became a virtue. Today, rattling those pots and pans is a fundamental part of my life. I’m a true foodie and devour everything from junk food to star-awarded cuisine. Literally. I eat way too fast.
