3 tricks to make wearing heavy earrings much more bearable

Love the look of XXL bling on your ears, but struggle with the pain it entails? Here's how you can make it more gentle on your ears.

Statement earrings may enhance your outfit, but they usually pull on your earlobes. This doesn’t just look unsightly, but can also cause quite a bit of pain – at the very latest after a few hours of wearing them. Anyone who regularly relies on heavy ear jewellery also risks chronic tissue stretching as they age. Which is why I, a fan of large earrings, resort to three tricks to distribute their weight better. The result is more comfort and less strain on my earlobes.

1. Reinforced plugs

Most stud earrings come with so-called butterfly backs or small silicone stoppers. This is suboptimal, as the weight of an entire earring is distributed over a very small area. Backs reinforced with a silicone plate make a noticeable difference here. They make even heavier earrings sit upright in the ear, so you can wear them without pain.

Choose your fighter: reinforced backs, earlobe tape or a plaster roll?

2. Special earlobe tape

You can achieve a similar effect with oval patches, which are specially designed for heavy earrings and are suitable for all kinds of closures. You apply the thin patches to the back of your earlobe before threading the earring through. It’s amazing how big a difference this unassuming little patch provides. Sadly, earlobe tape isn’t yet common here in Switzerland. However, a quick Google search will yield more than enough results.

3. Ordinary plaster roll

Equally effective and available in our shop (only in value packs, unfortunately) or in pharmacies are transparent plaster rolls, or surgical tape. It can be converted to support those troubling earrings in a few simple steps.

Option one: Cut out an oval of about 1.5 centimetres in width with a small pair of scissors – bam, you’ve got homemade earlobe tape!

Option 2: If you want to go a little quicker and messier, simply tear off a similar sized rectangle.

Option 3: Tear off a slightly longer rectangle and roll it up so that it’s sticky on both sides. This offers even stronger support. Option 3 is a bit more visible – although you’ll still have to look extremely closely to notice it. After all, the tape is transparent and the backs of your earlobes are usually pretty well hidden.
