ETM Testmagazin pitted 14 hair dryers against each other. The result? If you want to buy the test winner with a "very good" rating, you'll have to dig deep into your pockets. "Good" hairdryers are available for much less money.

The hairdryer is probably the electronic beauty appliance that almost everyone owns. Not least because men also like to reach for it when they need to dry their hair quickly. Most hairdryers are now equipped with more or less the same functions, such as the cold function for setting the style or the ion function, which is designed to prevent frizz and electrically charged hair. Also often included: different styling attachments. Nevertheless, there are differences - and not just in terms of price. The consumer magazine for home and garden analysed 14 different models for aspects such as function, handling, safety, workmanship, features and volume.

The former includes a test of the temperature and fan performance, also depending on the attachments used. In terms of handling, ease of use was measured in relation to weight, cable length and controls. The term safety covers overheating protection, temperatures of the handle, the body and the styling nozzles during operation. In terms of workmanship, the overall impression was recorded: Are the corners and edges well finished? Are the accessories easy to attach and detach? Last but not least, the volume was also measured and assessed from a distance of 20 cm. This resulted in an overall rating, which is expressed as a percentage in the following list.

These are the results at a glance

Place 1

Test winner with an overall rating of 95.9% "very good"

The most expensive model took first place: the innovative "Supersonic" from Dyson with four temperature and three fan settings. It scores points with three magnetic attachments and a motor built into the handle. This enables comfortable operation even over longer periods. The Supersonic also offers the lowest volume and the most powerful fan.

Place 2

Overall rating 91.3% "good"

In second place was the "Satin Hair 7 Professional SensoDryer HD785" from Braun. It has four temperature settings and two blower settings and comes with a styling nozzle and diffuser. It scores highly with its wide range of temperatures and two handle options. The heavy weight and the slightly too short cable are criticised.

Place 3

Overall rating 90.5% "good"

The compact "6500DEE Hair Dryer Digital Sensor" from BaByliss came third and is a lightweight. However, the model is the loudest and, in addition to the two blower settings, does not allow manual temperature adjustment, as this is automatically taken over by the appliance.

Place 4

Overall rating 88.5% "good"

The "HC 60" from Beurer came in a solid fourth place. You can expect three temperature settings, two blower settings, two attachments, a low weight and a touch sensor. The latter ensures that the hairdryer can only be used when there is contact between the sensor and the skin. One criticism is that the control buttons are not labelled. Plus points for the cold function, which can be switched on permanently at the touch of a button.

Place 5

Overall rating 87.5% "good"

The lightweight and quiet "DryCare Advanced Hair Dryer HP8232/00" from Philips has three temperature settings and two blower settings as well as a styling nozzle and an asymmetrical diffuser as attachments. You won't find this exact model here, but you will find its successor:

Place 6

Overall rating 87.4% "good"

The "Keratin Protect Ion Hair Dryer with AC Motor AC8820" from Remington has the same number of temperature and blower settings as the Philips model. It also comes with two styling nozzles, a diffuser and the longest power cable in this test series. The heavy weight is a rather negative feature. Special extra: The hairdryer not only moisturises the hair with keratin and ions, but also with almond oil. For this purpose, there is a ring with moisturising substances in the air outlet.

Place 7

Overall rating 87.3% "good"

"Swiss Silent Jet 8600 Ionic" from Valera is equipped with a cable of the same length as the Remington model, as well as a Rotocord system to prevent tangled cables, two nozzles and a diffuser. The strong fan power at the lowest setting is criticised. This is one of the quieter models in the test series. In our range you will find the 8500 model, which is slightly quieter, but also 400 watts weaker:

Place 8

Overall rating 86.9% "good"

In eighth place is the "No 631" hairdryer from Carrera, which we do not carry in our range.

Place 9

Overall rating 86.7% "good"

In ninth place is the "Moveling CV3820" hair dryer from Rowenta, which we do not carry in our range.

Place 10

Overall rating 86.4% "good"

In tenth place is the "Ionic Hair Dryer HD 8680" from Grundig with a long power cable, an additional narrow styling nozzle for a precise air flow, good temperature selection and a high volume as well as a powerful fan despite a low setting.

Place 11

Overall rating 85.00% "good"

The "PC-HT 3010" from ProfiCare is lightweight and has a good range of wind speeds. However, handling is made more difficult by a short power cable, the long head shape and a styling nozzle that gets very hot. The cold setting was also classed as warm.

Place 12

Overall rating 84.9% "good"

In twelfth place is the "HT3661" from Clatronic, which we do not carry in our range.

Place 13

Overall rating 81.8% "good"

In thirteenth place is the "HT 1951" from Mia, which we do not carry in our range.

Place 14

Overall rating 80.9% "satisfactory"

In last place was the "HD-2322" from Tristar, which we do not carry in our range.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
